UTSA beat No. 2-ranked Stanford 6-5 in 10 innings on Monday at Roadrunner Field for a landmark victory in the school’s 40-year history of college sports.
UTSA led 5-2 after four innings before Stanford came back to tie it 5-5 with a run in the fifth and a two-run homer from Carter Graham in the eighth.
The Roadrunner’s John Chomko pitched the ninth and 10th innings to get the win. Chomko struck out the first two Stanford batters in the top of the 10th and got Carter to line out to retire the Cardinal.
That put UTSA in a position to end it with a run in the bottom of the 10th. Shane Sirdashney led off with a ground ball that Stanford turned into a throwing error that went into the Cardinal dugout. That put Sirdashney at second base with no outs and the Roadrunners were in business.
Kody Darcy was the second batter and put down a bunt. The Cardinal tried to get the lead runner but Sirdashney beat the throw to third, putting runners on the corners and still no outs.
That brought leadoff batter Leyton Barry to the plate. Barry was still looking for his first hit of the afternoon.
He got it when it counted the most, lashing a line drive to left-center to score Sirdashney and set off a celebration.

Longtime head coach Buddy Meyer was at the Rattlers’ helm and Jim Zeleznak was the top assistant coach when they claimed the 1989 championship trophy in Kansas City. Both were former St. Mary’s players. Meyer had been a member of the Rattlers’ first team to reach the national tournament.
All these years later, the St. Mary’s coaching staff has a familar look.
Zeleznak is in his 17th season as the Rattlers’ head coach, having taken over when Meyer retired after 27 years.

And Monday, when St. Mary’s made the short road trip to the north side of San Antonio to play UTSA, Buddy Meyer was in the stands right behind the Rattlers’ bench.
