Sammy Diaz hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give UTSA the go-ahead run in a 3-2 victory over Western Kentucky on Friday at Roadrunner Field.
The three-game Conference USA series continues Saturday and Sunday.
UTSA took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first inning on a sac fly by Antonio Valdez and second inning on an RBI double by Matt King. Western Kentucky tied it at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Diaz broke the tie when his homer cleare d the 405-foot mark on the batter’s eye in center field.
Roadrunners starting pitcher Luke Malone got the win to raise his record to 3-2. He went 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Deborah Nwakamma of the UTSA women’s basketball team is a 5-foot-8 senior guard from Nigeria.
Nwakamma played in 25 of UTSA’s 32 games this season and made five starts, averaging 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game. She scored a season-high 16 points against Abilene Christian on Nov. 20, 2022, at the Convocation Center.
Lamin Sabally played in 21 of UTSA men’s basketball’s 32 games this season and made six starts.
The 6-foot-8 sophomore from Berlin averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game. He recorded season highs of eight points at Middle Tennessee on Feb. 4 and eight rebounds against Trinity on Nov. 7.
Aleu Aleu averaged 2.6 points in 11.7 minutes per game this season for the UTSA men’s basketball game.
The 6-foot-9 guard/forward recorded a season-high nine points on Jan. 16 against Rice at the Convocation Center and nine rebounds on Nov. 17 against Texas State at the Convo. He played in 23 of 32 UTSA games this season and made six starts.
This was his second season at UTSA. He played in high school in Austin and was at Temple Community College before joining the Roadrunners.
Massal Diouf played in 27 of UTSA’s 32 games this season and made 21 starts.
The 6-foot-9 freshman center from the Netherlands had season highs of seven points against Florida International on Feb. 23 and seven rebounds against UAB on Dec. 31.
Antonio Valdez and Caleb Hill combined to hit three home runs to lead UTSA to a 14-3 victory over Utah on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
UTSA (10-3) won the last two games of the three-game series after Utah won the opener. The Roadrunners had 12 hits on Sunday after scoring 11 runs on 17 hits on Saturday.
Valdez hit his second and third home runs of the season and drove in five runs. Valdez has 23 hits and 22 RBIs in UTSA’s first 13 games.
Hill hit his first home run of the season and finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs.
Hill also scored on a double steal. It was the second time in the last week that UTSA scored on a double steal.
UTSA’s Leyton Barry hit a three-run double in the sixth inning. Shane Sirdashney, Taylor Smith and Isaiah Walker scored on the hit. The Roadrunners scored six runs in the inning to take an 11-2 lead.
UTSA starting pitcher Robbie Maldonado went 4.0 innings and allowed one run. Reliever Daniel Garza went 3.0 innings and allowed 1 run and got the win.
Jacob Germany recorded a double-double on Senior Night as UTSA beat Charlotte 78-73 in Conference USA men’s basketball on Thursday, March 2, 2023.
It was Germany’s final game at the Convocation Center in a Roadrunners uniform unless he chooses to return for a fifth season. The 6-foot-11 center finished the game with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds.
UTSA is piling up wins over the first two weeks of baseball season.
The Roadrunners have won eight of their first 10 games. UTSA beat Incarnate Word 2-1 on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field by scoring on a double steal in the bottom of the eighth inning.
