Flying Chanclas college team announces field staff of McLaren, Schiraldi, Aughney

Former Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren will be the manager for the 2020 Flying Chanclas de San Antonio.

The Chanclas are the San Antonio Missions’ entry in the Texas Collegiate League of summer baseball.

“I’m very excited to take part in the TCL,” McLaren said in a release by the Missions. “I’ve experienced a lot things as a baseball coach in my career and look forward to starting a new chapter.

“It’s great to be back in Texas, where I can’t wait to see a lot of old friends. I’ve always loved my time in San Antonio. It’s a great city and was a pleasure to come to Wolff Stadium during my scouting days. Burl (Yarbrough, Missions president) and the staff always made me feel at home. It’s a great venue to watch baseball.”

McLaren is from Houston and was a 1970 draft pick of the Houston Astros. He played seven seasons in the Astros organization.

Calvin Schiraldi will be the Chanclas’ pitching coach. He pitched for the University of Texas and for eight seasons in the majors.

Bryan Aughney will be the Chanclas’ hitting coach. He has been the head coach at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio since 2017.
