Luis Campusano is the No. 3 prospect in the San Diego Padres organization, according to MLB.com ratings.

His strong showing in spring training combined with the Padres’ need for another catcher due to an injury means Campusano will start the season in the majors. Multiple media reports from San Diego indicated Campusano was told today that he will be on the Padres’ opening day roster. He batted .279 in 20 games in the Padres’ 2021 spring training big league camp.

Campusano has played in only one major league game, having made his debut in the bigs last year in the covid-shortened 2020 season, and has never played in Double-A or Triple-A.

The 5-foot-11 catcher from Augusta, Georgia was drafted in the second round by the Padres in 2017. He spent that summer in rookie league, followed by Single-A ball in 2018 and 2019. He batted .325 with 15 home runs in 110 games in 2019.

His fast progression allowed him to jump over Double-A, meaning San Antonio Missions fans probably won’t ever get a chance to see him in person at Wolff Stadium.
