Flying Chanclas drop opener to Sod Squad

The Amarillo Sod Squad had the biggest inning and the biggest hits of the night to beat the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio 9-6 on Tuesday in Amarillo in the Texas Collegiate League opener for both teams.

The Chanclas got strong offensive output from the top of the order. The first four batters – Jordan Thompson, Porter Brown, Kyte McDonald and Lee Thomas – combined for six hits, four runs, five RBIs and two walks.

The Sod Squad had eight hits including two triples and a two-run homer. They scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and led the rest of the way.

There was also some visible rustiness, which wasn’t a surprise since most of the players hadn’t been in a game in months. The teams combined for eight errors and 16 walks.

AROUND THE TEXAS COLLEGIATE LEAGUE

The Victoria Generals won their opener on the road, beating the Acadiana Cane Cutters 2-1. Acadiana comes to Wolff Stadium to play the Flying Chanclas on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
