San Antonio Missions star CJ Abrams left Wednesday’s game in the top of the ninth inning as the team lost to the Corpus Christi Hooks 4-0 at Wolff Stadium.
Abrams is one of the top prospects in the San Diego Padres organization. The 20-year-old shortstop collided with second baseman Eguy Rosario on a ground ball up the middle. Abrams was not putting any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field.
The Missions’ offense managed only two hits on the night. It was the eighth-straight loss for the Missions, who were swept in their recent six-game road series against the Frisco RoughRiders.
There were some positive signs from the San Antonio pitching. Starter Aaron Leasher (4-3) took the loss, but pitched five innings and allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts.
Former big league pitcher Joe Beimel made his season debut, going one scoreless inning in relief in the eighth. Beimel last pitched in the majors with the Seattle Mariners in 2015.
Jose Azocar has settled into his spot as the San Antonio Missions’ leadoff hitter and center fielder.
The 25-year-old from Venezuela is currently on a seven-game hitting streak, batting 12-of-28 (.429) during that stretch including a home run Thursday night in Frisco.
Azocar is batting .276 on the season and has a .361 on-base percentage with three home runs, 18 RBIs and 21 walks in 44 games.
He was signed as a free agent to a minor league contract by the San Diego Padres in November 2020 after being in the Detroit Tigers Organization.
Allen Cordoba played in 100 games for the San Diego Padres in 2017.
He spent 2018 and 2019 in the Class A Cal League and didn’t see action during 2020 when covid wiped out the minor league season.
Saturday night, Cordoba made his 2021 season debut and played above Class A for the first time in four seasons when he was in uniform for the San Antonio Missions.
Cordoba was in the lineup again for the Missions on Sunday afternoon, both games as the starting third baseman. Cordoba had two walks on Saturday and recorded his first two hits of the season, including a double, on Sunday.
Cordoba is a 25-year-old infielder/outfielder from Panama. He is listed at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, but looks bigger than that in person. He made his minor league debut in rookie league in 2013. He batted .301 with five home runs in the Cal League in 2019.
His 2017 season with the Padres, when he batted .208 with four home runs as a 21-year-old, was the only time he has spent in the majors.
San Diego Padres pitching prospect Reggie Lawson saw his first action of the season when he started for the San Antonio Missions on Wednesday at Wolff Stadium.
The Midland RockHounds won 9-1, ending the Missions’ win streak at three games.
Lawson had Tommy John surgery early in 2020 and was still on the injured list when the 2021 season opened. He was 3-1 in six games in Double-A in 2019.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander is listed as the No. 7 prospect in the Padres organization according to MLB.com. Now 23 years old, he is the third highest pitcher among Padres prospects. Lawson was the No. 71 overall pick by the Padres in the 2016 draft.
Lawson pitched a scoreless first inning on Wednesday. It appeared he was scheduled to pitch the first two innings, but he left with one out in the second.
He finished with 1 1/3 innings, four runs, one earned, three hits, one walk and no strikeouts. The Missions committed three errors while he was in the game, including a pickoff throw to second base that went into the outfield.

The 27-year-old left-hander made eight appearances on the mound for the Missions and did not allow a run his first seven times out. He had a 1-0 record and 1.35 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings.
Reeves was a 10th-round pick by the Yankees in 2015 out of The Citadel. His only previous experience above the Double-A level was one game in Triple-A in 2018. The Padres acquired Reeves in a trade with the Yankees on Jan. 6, 2021.
Reiss Knehr was the San Antonio Missions’ starting pitcher on opening day.
The 24-year-old from New York is the Missions’ scheduled starter in tonight’s road game against Northwest Arkansas. He has made four starts this season and has a 2-1 record and 4.74 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 19.0 innings.
Knehr is in his first season in Double-A. The San Diego Padres picked him in the 20th round of the 2018 draft.
The 6-foot-2 right-hander had a 3-5 record in Class A in 2019 on 12 starts and 17 total appearances. He had a 3-0 record in rookie ball in and 0-1 in Class A 2018 in 20 games, 19 of those in relief.
Eguy Rosario is the No. 17 prospect in the San Diego Padres organization, according to MLB.com.
The 21-year-old infielder has played second base, third base and shortstop so far this season for the San Antonio Missions.
Rosario got off to a slow start to the season as a batter, but has four hits in the last three games. He had two hits including a double in the Missions’ 7-5 road victory over Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday night.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Rosario was signed by the Padres as a free agent in August 2015. He batted .278 with seven home runs in Class A in 2019. Rosario was with the Padres major league team in 2021 spring training in Arizona.
Uniform note: Rosario wore No. 19 at the beginning of the season. He changed to No. 1.
Adrian Martinez is part of the San Antonio Missions’ starting pitching rotation.
The 24-year-old from Mexico has made four starts this season and has a 2.40 ERA with an 0-2 record. He has recorded 14 strikeouts in 15.0 innings. In his last three starts, he has gone four innings each time and allowed a combined four runs.
Martinez had a 7-4 record in Class A in 2019. He doesn’t have any stats from last summer after covid wiped out the minor-league season.
The 6-foot-2 right-hander was originally signed by the San Diego Padres to a minor-league contract as a free agent in February 2015.
