San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr.’s second rehab game with San Antonio Missions
Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres played shortstop and batted leadoff for the San Antonio Missions against the Wichita Wind Surge on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, at Wolff Stadium. It was his second rehab game.
Tatis finished 0-for-3. He grounded out hard to first base in the first inning. He flied out to center in the third inning. He grounded out to third in the fifth inning after hitting a very long line drive foul down the left-field line.
His most notable defensive play was an over-the-shoulder catch on a fly ball in short left field.
He was replaced in the sixth inning.
Tatis is expected to travel with the Missions on their upcoming road trip, which begins Tuesday in Frisco, Texas.
San Antonio officially back in the game: Hines Ward to coach city’s XFL team
The XFL officially announced on Sunday that San Antonio is one of eight teams that will be part of the league when it resumes action. The season opens Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023.
Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward will be San Antonio’s head coach.
Ward made his first order of business stirring up the in-state rivalries. Arlington and Houston will also have teams in XFL 2023.
“I’m know how competitive Texas is so I’m going to put it out there right now, go San Antonio! We will bring home the Texas state title.”
“The state of Texas is so passionate about football,” Ward said. “I’m know how competitive Texas is so I’m going to put it out there right now, go San Antonio! We will bring home the Texas state title. …
“When we come here to Arlington, we go to Houston, I want to hear all the boos because I guarantee when you’re in the Alamodome, we’re going to boo the crap out of yourself too.”
When the Commanders played in the AAF in the spring of 2019, Ward served as that league’s director of player development.
Ward is best known from his 13 seasons as an NFL receiver, including two appearances in the Super Bowl. He is the Steelers all-time leader in receptions. He was most recently the wide receivers coach at Florida Atlantic University. He was also an assistant coach with the New York Jets and interviewed for the Houston Texans head coaching job.
Ward envisions the XFL bringing the fans a closer look at what goes on within the teams as the games happen.
“At the end of the day the fans, they want transparency” Ward said. “They want to see the connection that the coaches have with the players. They want to hear the dialog that goes on. They want to go behind enemy lines, what really goes on and hear the conversations.
“They want to see that engagement between the coaches and the players. Hopefully this season will be transparent to the fans. We want to bring that entertainment to you guys.”

XFL to announce 2023 cities tonight
The latest version of the XFL takes a major step tonight when the pro football league announces the cities and stadiums that will host teams for the 2023 season.
Recent reports indicate former Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver Hines Ward will be the head coach of a San Antonio team.
The announcement will be made in a town hall style meeting at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on XFL.com.
XFL owners Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson and league president Russ Brandson will take part in the announcement.
The eight league coaches will also be involved – Reggie Barlow, Anthony Becht, Terrell Buckley, Jim Haslett, Wade Phillips, Bob Stoops, Rod Woodson and Ward.

UTSA baseball’s Daniel Shafer – photo gallery
The junior right-hander from Willis, Texas appeared in 16 games in relief and recorded a 3-1 record with five saves and a 3.29 ERA.
Shafer went a stretch of six straight appearances without allowing an earned run. He did not pitch after April 24 due to an injury.

The sophomore from Clear Creek High School in League City in the Houston area led UTSA in on-base percentage at .450 with the help of 26 walks.

In 2021 he batted a team-best .382 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 31 games.
A 6-foot-2 junior from Houston, he went to IMG Academy in Florida in high school.

The senior from O’Connor High School batted .309 with six home runs and 50 RBIs in 2022. In 2021, he batted .295 with 24 RBIs in 46 games.
UTSA’s Ian Bailey – photo gallery
The grad student from Stevens High School in San Antonio leads UTSA in home runs with 15, including one Friday and two Saturday in the Roadrunners’ final two games of the regular season. He has a .298 batting average with 48 RBIs.
Bailey played for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio during the 2021 summer Texas Collegiate League season. He batted .283 with five home runs in 35 games and earned All-TCL honors.
