The San Antonio Missions hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to escape with a 7-6 victory over the Springfield Cardinals on Saturday at Wolff Stadium.

Graham Pauley’s third hit of the night was a solo home run that put the Missions in front 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth. Nathan Martorella followed with another homer, giving the Missions a 7-5 lead and an insurance run they would need.

The Cardinals scored a run in the ninth to make it closer.

The Missions scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead. Springfield bounced back with a run in the top of the eighth to tie it 5-5.

The Missions’ seventh-inning rally included a two-run homer by Michael De La Cruz and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Ripken Reyes that scored Cole Cummings.

San Antonio starting pitcher Jairo Iriarte didn’t get a decision but had a solid outing. He went five innings and allowed three runs, three hits, two walks and struck out nine batters.

Kervin Pichardo put the Missions in front 3-0 with his second home run of the season.
Jared Kollar pitched in his very first game in a San Antonio Missions uniform on Friday night at Wolff Stadium.

Outfielder Kervin Pichardo was a much more experienced member of the team, playing in his ninth game with the Missions.

The young twosome helped the Missions build an early 4-0 lead on the way to beating the Frisco RoughRiders 10-3.

Pichardo hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning and the Missions led the rest of the way.

Kollar held Frisco scoreless the first four innings. He was one out away from being in a position to get a win before giving up two runs in the top of the fifth and being replaced.

Pichardo finished the game with three hits including a double and had six RBIs and one run.

Juan Fernandez had three hits including a double, one walk and scored twice. Michael De La Cruz and Brandon Valenzuela both had two hits. Valenzuela was in only his third game since being promoted to Double-A and those were his first two hits with the Missions.

Relief pitcher Justin Lopez took over for Kollar and went 2 1/3 innings. He earned the win and allowed one run, two hits and one walk with one strikeout. James Bourque pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jason Blanchard a scoreless ninth to finish off the game.

Jackson Wolf turned in one of his best pitching performances of the season as the San Antonio Missions beat the Amarillo Sod Poodles 8-2 on Friday at Wolff Stadium.

The Missions have won the first four games of the series, with remaining games against Amarillo on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Wolf pitched six innings – his second longest start of the season – and got the win to raise his record to 3-5. He allowed one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Wolf had gone seven innings on May 7 in Tulsa in his longest outing.

The performance helped Wolf get back on track and lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 4.38. The 6-foot-7 left-hander had a 0-3 record in his previous four starts. Wolf is the No. 16 prospect in the San Diego Padres minor league organization, and the second-highest rated left-handed pitcher.

Missions batters took advantage of shaky pitching from the Sod Poodles. San Antonio’s eight runs came on only five hits. Amarillo pitchers gave up 11 walks and four hit-by-pitches (Ripken Reyes and Korry Howell were both hit twice).

Reyes extended hit hitting streak to five games with an RBI double that drove in Jorge Ona and Ray-Patrick Didder with the Missions’ first runs of the game in the second inning. Reyes also stole two bases and scored a run.

Cole Cummings, playing in just his third game with the Missions, had a two-run double in the fifth inning that gave San Antonio a 4-1 lead.

Three Missions relievers – Justin Lopez, Jason Blanchard and Nick Hernandez – pitched one inning each to finish game.
