Flying Chanclas keep soaring at home

The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio remained undefeated at Wolff Stadium with a 6-1 victory over the Round Rock Hairy Men on Sunday.

The Chanclas got eight hits including a triple and double by Lee Thomas of University of the Incarnate Word and a double by Johnny Hernandez of St. Mary’s University.

Chanclas pitchers also had a solid night, limiting the Hairy Men to four hits and only one walk with 10 strikeouts.

Lance Lusk from Sam Houston State started on the mound and went four innings. Lusk (1-0) gave up one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk to get the win.

Tyler Flores of Clark High School and A&M-Kingsville pitched three scoreless innings in relief and Connor Schmidt of Devine High School and St. Mary’s pitched the final two scoreless innings.

The Chanclas are off Monday before playing a three-game series in Victoria. The Chanclas are back home Friday, Saturday and Sunday for three more games against Victoria.

Johnny Hernandez has been the starting second baseman for most of this season for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio. He has played in six of the Chanclas’ first eight games.

Hernandez is from St. Mary’s University and El Paso Montwood. He batted .299 and hit three home runs while playing in all 22 games for St. Mary’s in the shortened 2020 season.

Chanclas add three from St. Mary’s

The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio announced Friday they have signed three players from St. Mary’s for the 2020 Texas Collegiate League summer baseball season:

P Connor Schmidt, Devine
P Johnny Panatex, Pflugerville
IF Johnny Hernandez, El Paso

Panatex made eight appearances, all in relief, during the abbreviated 2020 college season. He had a 2-0 record and a 2.25 ERA.

Schmidt appeared in eight games with one start. He had a 0-1 record with a 5.11 ERA.

Hernandez batted .299 in 22 games with a team-high three home runs.

The Flying Chanclas are the San Antonio Missions’ entry in the TCL.

St. Mary’s opens baseball season with win against Cameron

St. Mary’s opened its 2020 baseball season with a 5-0 shutout of Cameron on Friday at home at Dickson Stadium.

Rattlers starting pitcher Zach De La Garza went six innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and struck out eight batters.

Patrick Fennell scored the first run of the season for St. Mary’s in the bottom of the second inning. Fennell led off the inning with a single, advanced on Mitchell Caskey’s double and scored on an error.

Missions beat OKC to stay close in playoff chase

The San Antonio Missions got key hits and shutout pitching through eight innings to beat the Oklahoma City Dodgers 4-2 on Friday at Wolff Stadium.

The Missions remain 1 1/2 games behind the Round Rock Express in the Pacific Coast League American Southern Standings. Round Rock beat New Orleans 3-2 on Friday.

Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer in the third inning, his second home run and fourth extra-base hit since joining the Missions on Aug. 16.

Nate Orf drove in the Missions’ first run with an RBI single in the second inning.

Troy Stokes Jr. added an RBI single in the sixth inning to bring in the Missions’ final run.

Missions starting pitcher Aaron Wilkerson (8-2) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. He lowered his season ERA to 3.34.

Angel Perdomo and Miguel Sanchez combined to pitch a scoreless sixth inning. Freddy Peralta kept the Dodgers scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Dodgers scored both of their runs in the top of the ninth off of Missions reliever Ray Black.

Bubba Derby had a run-scoring double and also started off a combined shutout as the San Antonio Missions beat the New Orleans Baby Cakes 8-0 Sunday at Wolff Stadium.

Derby (6-7) pitched five scoresless innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Miguel Sanchez followed with 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Angel Perdomo pitched the last 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.

Tyler Austin, playing first base and starting for the second time with the Missions, had two hits including a fourth-inning home run. Troy Stokes Jr. and Corey Ray also had two hits each.

Troy Stokes Jr. homers to rally Missions past Redbirds

Troy Stokes Jr. hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning as the San Antonio Missions rallied past the Memphis Redbirds 6-4 Saturday at Wolff Stadium.

Stokes’ homer broke a 4-4 tie and put the Missions in front for good.

Cory Spangenberg gave the Missions an insurance run in the eighth inning when he scored from second on a Redbirds throwing error.

Missions reliever Donnie Hart pitched the final out of the game for his second save of the season.
