Jackson Wolf turned in one of his best pitching performances of the season as the San Antonio Missions beat the Amarillo Sod Poodles 8-2 on Friday at Wolff Stadium.

The Missions have won the first four games of the series, with remaining games against Amarillo on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Wolf pitched six innings – his second longest start of the season – and got the win to raise his record to 3-5. He allowed one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Wolf had gone seven innings on May 7 in Tulsa in his longest outing.

The performance helped Wolf get back on track and lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 4.38. The 6-foot-7 left-hander had a 0-3 record in his previous four starts. Wolf is the No. 16 prospect in the San Diego Padres minor league organization, and the second-highest rated left-handed pitcher.

Missions batters took advantage of shaky pitching from the Sod Poodles. San Antonio’s eight runs came on only five hits. Amarillo pitchers gave up 11 walks and four hit-by-pitches (Ripken Reyes and Korry Howell were both hit twice).

Reyes extended hit hitting streak to five games with an RBI double that drove in Jorge Ona and Ray-Patrick Didder with the Missions’ first runs of the game in the second inning. Reyes also stole two bases and scored a run.

Cole Cummings, playing in just his third game with the Missions, had a two-run double in the fifth inning that gave San Antonio a 4-1 lead.

Three Missions relievers – Justin Lopez, Jason Blanchard and Nick Hernandez – pitched one inning each to finish game.

The Missions put together three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the ninth. The sac fly was the Missions’ only out in the frame, as five straight batters produced strong at-bats.

San Antonio Missions pitcher Efrain Contreras turned his seventh start of the season into his first win on Thursday at Wolff Stadium.

Contreras (1-4) pitched six scoreless innings and allowed three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts as the Missions beat the Corpus Christi Hooks 3-1.

It was Contreras’ longest outing of the season. The 23-year-old right-hander improved his season ERA from 6.50 to 4.88.

The win was a long time coming for Contreras. His last win before Thursday night was in Class A ball on Aug. 27, 2019. He went 6-6 that season.

Contreras didn’t play in 2020 because of the covid season. He had Tommy John surgery in late 2020 and missed all of the 2021 season. Last summer he was 0-5 with a 5.74 ERA in 17 starts in High-A.

Fernandez had a hit and a single. He has three hits and two RBIs so far in the series and is batting .373 for the season – the only Missions player batting better than .300. He finished the month of April with an eight-game hitting streak before going hitless in three road games last week.

The Missions recorded two runs in the first inning when Ripken Reyes scored on a wild pitch and Daniel Johnson had a sacrifice fly to bring in Pedro Castellanos. Fernandez singled to center to drive in Reyes in the fifth.

Reyes put himself in scoring position twice with a triple in the first inning and a double in the fifth.

Corpus Christi made it close by loading the bases and scoring a run in the eighth inning and putting two runners on base in the ninth. Missions reliever Lake Bachar got the final two outs for his second save of the season.

De La Cruz hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning. He finished with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Missions piled up 11 hits. Ripken Reyes, another switch-hitter, had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run. Pedro Castellanos had two hits and an RBI and was hit by a pitch. Juan Fernandez had two hits, doubled for the second game in a row, had one RBI and scored twice.
